Selecting and Styling your Family Photo Shoot
What to wear is the biggest question I get before family photos. It can be really stressful coordinating everyone’s outfits for that perfect photo you’ve been imagining on your wall. To make it easy on families, I’ve partnered with a site that is basically a questionnaire about what you’re looking for and then it will show you examples of clothing that you can buy and where to buy it from! You can also upload certain pieces of clothing that are already in your closet to pair it when other pieces.
If definitely takes the stress off of getting clothing coordinated. I always insist that families need to think about where they want their photos to live in their home and base clothing colors off of that. Coordinating those two things will make your photos fit seamlessly into your space.
Here are the first couple of families to debut this new tool! Remember that it isn’t so much about clothing but the time you spend as a family that you want to capture in your photos. As stressful as choosing clothing for a shoot can be, remember that!
If you’re from Florida or Dallas and you’re loving this location, so sorry! I photographed them on a family trip to DC. This is at Haines Point in Arlington. Very cool spot to see the airplanes and different boats come by. The side walk here DOES flood as a warning! I love the water in these shots because DC has a LOT of water around it so it’s an interesting element to add to the photos. I think I’m partial to loving water in shots now living in the Space Coast Florida. I kept looking to spot dolphins, manatees, or alligators.
If you can you should definitely get photos together WITH your sister! Bonus it makes a GREAT gift for your mom and dad…done and done! I love Kristen’s blue dress how it matches with the blue dinning room chairs. It’s a great pop of color that isn’t distracting for the other’s in the family. The little kids clothing together looks perfectly styled, way to go Kelly and Kristen!
Haines point was a perfect location for this shoot because it provided perfect distraction for toddlers. “Look at the airplanes!!!”
Are you worried about how your kids will act during a photo session? If I could poll a wide variety of parents, I’m sure the answer would be Y-E-S! If your kids are over the age of 1 and under the age of 11, they will probably not act the way that you want them to during the photoshoot! Let this be your mental state so that you’re prepared! Thank you guys SO much for having me take these photos of your families. As the years pass on, I hope you’ll remember these special little human moments and it will help you love and appreciate these guys more and more.
