Maternity Session (Family rep!)

Introducing one of my family reps for 2019! Now technically you have to be a family of three to be a member of the family rep, but that’s only a “rule” so that I can really focus on families with kids and not just couples BUT this is almost a family of three!

Doesn’t it seem like everyone’s pregnancy and labor goes by way faster than your own? It really does feel like yesterday Rebecca told me she was pregnant and that I needed to clear my calendar for December!

A while ago I wrote a post about the unspoken rules of where to hang different types of portraits. Like, is it appropriate to hang family photos in your bathroom? It got me thinking after we painted our bedroom and I (finally!) could hang something on the wall.

So what about maternity photos? The post addresses maternity photos so you should read about it here

Is there a spot in your home that maternity photos shouldn’t go?

For instance, this huge print of Rebecca (she looks GORGEOUS!) over the couch contrasted with an album….

Large maternity print contrasted with large album

To me, and this is totally my design opinion, but the album feels more natural for a maternity session. Once the baby comes, the baby will be the center of your walls. You could totally design a wall gallery with baby and maternity photos, I just would advise a smaller version of your maternity photos - and using an image of you and your partner would also be nice!

What do you think? Have you ever gotten wall art that you thought after the fact wasn’t fitting for the specific room? I’d love to hear about it!

Welcome to the World Sadie!

Urban family photos: Wendel Family

I never walk away from photographing Amanda and Eric without a great story.

That’s why photographing them this year apart of my family rep program has been such an adventure!

Amanda has great style and I expected no less when I knew she was bringing her very stylish sister along for this shoot. The colors of their outfits were SO great! AND I love the urban feel with the colors they chose…and to get even more dorky obsessed I love the juxtaposition of the floral dresses with the urban landscape - ok ok I’ll stop!

But seriously if you’re here because you have NO idea what to wear for your photo shoot…just go grab what they wore. You won’t be disappointed!

I cant’ exactly post the specific location where we were (that’s the great story from this shoot) but you might recognize it if you’re from around here. And if you’re here looking for location inspiration for your shoot, you can’t take photos here. wa waaaaa.

Bummer, because I really loved it! I guess these will be considered collector edition prints?

Here is a PRO tip:

During our planning meeting for your session I’ll ask you where you want your photos from the session to live. Look at the room that you’re envisioning and select your outfit colors to compliment the space. LIKE THIS CHAIR! I think it works really well with the grey and small bits of purple in the floral dresses.

What is my family rep program?

What is a styled session?

Have you heard of styled sessions? I provide styled sessions for all of my families in my family rep programs and the question often comes up..

What is a styled session?

I always say that most of the wedding photos you see on pinterest are actually styled sessions, I’m not sure that’s actually true but I feel like it gives you a good idea of what I mean. A styled session is a session where they help select a portion or all of the different aspects of styling that goes into a session. This could be, har and make-up, clothing, location, or props. The photographer often works with different vendors in a collaboration effort to make the styled session happen.

Here is an example:

I worked with Keight and Ashley from Lonestar Lettering to create a style session for a one year old in my family rep program. They created the hand painted sign to be photographed in the session. Keight and Ashley were told the colors and details of the sign but then they were left up to their own creative juices to come up with the sign. Styled sessions are a great way for creatives to style something they’ve always wanted to create.

Keight and Ashley (owners of Lonestar lettering) are based out of Wylie Texas. They provide hand painted signs, calligraphy, and watercolors for weddings and birthdays. Keight and I talked about how the also have done busy books for babies and want to do more of those. They sounded really fun and enjoyable for babies! They also do memory books of baby first year with painted pages and a customizable cover.

For the styled session I also worked with Julie’s Sweets Bakery in The Colony. They made the smash cake for the session. I liked knowing that they cake would be made with no preservatives, fresh ingredients, and from scratch.

The Bird Family: Family Rep Program

Introducing the Bird family! I secretly wanted to be friends with Amy before she even knew who I was. She always amazed me with her carefree attitude of taking care of so many people in her life but still managing to look really cute and always using a nice sweet voice with her kids:)

I think we became friends when my youngest starting calling her youngest “Dadda’s baby” because he was her teacher in nursery at church.

And to make matters even more confusing, her husband, Eric is about the same height as my husband (which is really tall) and they usually wear the same color of colors (do they coordinate that stuff?!) so I often find myself from the corner of my eyes *almost* mistaking Eric for Thomas — which could be really embarrassing one day.

They really do have an awesome family!

Some of the favorites…

Here is Sydney, Evie, Eric, Amy, Josie, Silas, and Owen (from left to right)

Thank you, guys!!! I love having you apart of my Family Rep Program!

What to wear Wednesdays: Rent the Runway

Personally this week I’ve been on CLOUD 9! It’s been such a productive hustle over here.  Before I got started in my own business I would watch the hours click by on the clock just waiting for my last art class of the day to go home so that I could go home.  And I definitely lived for the holidays.  But now? I work every single day.  I totally wouldn’t change it though because I LOVE IT! It definitely has it’s perks….but not going lie, it also has it’s disadvantages.  Being an entrepreneur is often lonesome and really really fearful!

But like I said this week has been awesome!!!! My highlights have been getting my new style guide hot off the press, launching my first and awesome Family Rep Program, AND (this one is SO BIG!!) two VERY well known photographers recognizing my photography work – I literally squealed and did a happy dance – actually I’m still doing that.

I also was REALLY excited because a few weeks ago I wrote about how red was the new color for Fall 2017. Then this popped over into my inbox….

Have you heard of rent the runway? If you’ve read my style guide (which all my client get upon booking!) then you know that I LOVE IT! It’s a great way to not spend a ton of money on gorgeous runway looking dresses to look like a BILLION dollars for your photo session. And look at that red dress?! You can find just the right red dress for you right here!

I’d love to see this dress paired with a crimson tie for your guy, floral with crimson hues dress for your little girl, and deep red suspenders and bow tie from London Jae Apparel

That’s it for now! If you’d like to read other “what to wear” ideas go to the top and just search “what to wear”. See you next week!

Update (amazing!) style guide is here!

It’s here!!! I’ve been planning this out for about a year now and I’m so excited to release my magazine style guide! There is even NEW information! This is one of the changes that I’m making to Kaitlin Roten Photography.  This is one of the first changes and more can be expected after the first of the year….the anticipation!

One more thing before you go – have you heard about my Family Rep Program? If you’ve ever thought about booking a family session with me this is a NO BRAINER! It’s the same cost as a family session BUT you get HUGE BONUSES! Complimentary mini-shoots, styled shoots, and an heirloom locket of a favorite family photo from your experience with me.  Hop on over to the page to read and apply for it – applications are due in ONE WEEK!!!

Here’s a sneak peak of my style guide! 19 pages of helpful information you get when you book a session with me.  It will help you know what to expect, what to bring, and what most people spend the majority of their time on WHAT TO WEAR!
