What is a styled session?

Have you heard of styled sessions? I provide styled sessions for all of my families in my family rep programs and the question often comes up..

What is a styled session?

I always say that most of the wedding photos you see on pinterest are actually styled sessions, I’m not sure that’s actually true but I feel like it gives you a good idea of what I mean. A styled session is a session where they help select a portion or all of the different aspects of styling that goes into a session. This could be, har and make-up, clothing, location, or props. The photographer often works with different vendors in a collaboration effort to make the styled session happen.

Here is an example:

I worked with Keight and Ashley from Lonestar Lettering to create a style session for a one year old in my family rep program. They created the hand painted sign to be photographed in the session. Keight and Ashley were told the colors and details of the sign but then they were left up to their own creative juices to come up with the sign. Styled sessions are a great way for creatives to style something they’ve always wanted to create.

Keight and Ashley (owners of Lonestar lettering) are based out of Wylie Texas. They provide hand painted signs, calligraphy, and watercolors for weddings and birthdays. Keight and I talked about how the also have done busy books for babies and want to do more of those. They sounded really fun and enjoyable for babies! They also do memory books of baby first year with painted pages and a customizable cover.

For the styled session I also worked with Julie’s Sweets Bakery in The Colony. They made the smash cake for the session. I liked knowing that they cake would be made with no preservatives, fresh ingredients, and from scratch.

Styled Shoot: Lavender Ridge Farms

Here’s some wedding inspiration for you today! I teamed up with some awesome people to make this happen! There are many great details to get  you thinking how to style your own wedding.  For this shoot we all came together to provide you with details that are eco-friendly.

Style Designer: Brittany Baxley (the queen of thrift and everything beautiful!) IG @pinthrift
Cake: Lakeview Bakery of Rowlett IG @lakeviewbakeryrowlett
Flowers: Annamarie IG @abundantflowershop
Make up: Jennifer Peterson on Facebook at Lip Locked Smooches
Bride: Amanda Wendel IG @mrsamandawendel
Venue: Lavender Ridge Farms on Facebook at Lavender Ridge Farms in Gainsville, Texas
Photographer: Kaitlin Roten IG @Kaitlinroten

Brittany gathered the details from her expertise at thrifting.
Some of the details came from the Canton Trade Days

Napkins were tied together using blood grass blades.

My favorite details came from the flowers. They were a show stopper – even amidst a beautiful butterfly garden at Lavender Ridge Farms.  Annamarie from abundant flower shop blew my mind. Here are the details…

Bridal Bouquet:

Kale & Magnolia Leaves & Forage for any additional greens/textures based on season and what grows natively.

Centerpieces:
Mason Jars with Jewels – Use any type of jar and pick up necklaces or bracelets from thrift stores or from friends and family etc.

Clear milk jars dipped in gold – Any jar or glassware dipped in any color paint to match the theme. Fresh Dill from garden or purchase from grocery store in produce.

Succulent planter – office wire baskets spray painted any color, succulent plants planted in ziploc bag liners, use moss to line and cover the bag. Succulents can be later replanted at home.

Purple Jew – hanging potted plant, remove hanger and set in any home decor basket (make sure soil is dry so no drainage). Optional – add sticks from willow trees

The wedding dress was rented from Rent the Runway
A great choice to have a beautiful dress for your wedding, not spend a ton of money (it was under $200) and be able to be eco-friendly.

The food was provided from Lavender Ridge Farms’ menu. With Lavender Honey Chicken Salad and the Salad Trio.

The beautiful cake! It is a naked, white cake with buttercream frosting.  Beautiful peonies cascading down the side.

These are photos from the bride and groom’s engagement session.
They are printed on recycled photo paper and hung on this thrifted merry-go-round found at the Canton Trade Days.

Gathered flowers were picked to add some accents on the drink table!

Thank you to all for the help! HUGE SUCCESS and so beautiful!!!

Irie – boho styled children portrait

I tried to explain the word “hippy” to Irie as I placed her lace headband boho style on her head.  I wasn’t prepared for a five year old definition of the word.  After I looked at a few photos on the back of my camera I told her that however her photos came out, she could use them to understand the word! I love the colors of her shoot! Irie’s hair is one of her most striking features and I love the way the curls fell and floated in the slight breeze.

As a natural light specialist, it’s really important to choose the right time of day for your shoot! In your style guide (that I send all my clients!) I go more into this.  I love the warm tones as the evening sun in this session!

I love the pop of peonies here! I also go more into detail on what to bring to your photo shoot in your “style guide” when you book.  Details can be a great element to your photo shoot to make it look more like you and unique.

Location: Carrollton Green belt
This is definitely a favorite place to shoot.  If you missed other locations to have your photo shoot – look here!
