Spouse photos or skip them?

During a family photo session should you take time to take photos of you and your spouse?

Let’s be real.

During the toddler years your relationship with your spouse often takes a backseat! Those toddlers require so much physical energy. So while family photos are about documenting your growing family through these years should you take photos of you and your spouse?

What if you haven’t lost those extra pounds you were hoping to loose?

What will your kids do while I snap a few of you and your spouse?

I mean besides run around like crazy animals??? Who RAISES them??? haha.

I’d argue that this is the PERFECT time to take photos of you and your spouse together. It’s probably been a few years since your wedding, when you last had professional photos, and as much as it is important to photograph your family together at this time, you and your spouse are equally important! So what if you haven’t lost those extra pounds? You’ll just feel even better when you do and you look back on these photos. If your weight is holding you back from taking photos DON’T LET IT! As the years pass you’ll want to remember these days, no matter how you look or dark the days are for you.
I’ve talked to MANY people about this conflict - not wanting to take photos because they’re aren’t happy with the body. They did take photos and guess what? NONE of them regretted having their photos taken. My style guide goes into details about what looks best on camera, that could help you a lot picking out the right outfit for your body type. I also have some posing tricks that will make you look comfortable in the photos. It’s REALLY important to voice your concerns to your photographer BEFORE your shoot so your photographer can help you achieve the best photos!

So what will your kids do?

In my style guide it prepares you with things to bring for your kids for the photo shoot. So those tips could come in handy during the few minutes I set you guys up for a photo. I also have some sneaky tricks that work well during this time that always are really fun. Most of the time the kids are behind me trying to “make mommy and daddy laugh”. It’s really fun for them to be on this side of the camera being my special helper.

What to wear Wednesdays

Scroll down for my answer to my 2nd most popular question: How do I convince my husband!

It's been a while! I had what to wear Wednesday's going for a LONG time, lost track of time and took a break (to build a new website and focus on getting more schools into my 2018 schedule!) but today it's BACK!

I had a photo friend from L.A. post she was looking for models for her Dallas trip! Me, me, me! I have this giant wall in my house that I'm really hoping to fill this year of photos of our family.  Lily's work is so beautiful so I really hoped that she would choose us for her models!

I can't wait to see the REAL photos! In the meantime, I wanted to post this i-Phone photo talk about two different things I get asked a lot being a photographer.

photo couple in deep ellum

#1: What do we wear?!!

I know (from experience!) this can be really stressful! (Did you know that all my booking families get a style guide that goes into great depth about what looks best in camera?! It takes the guess work out!)

My general guidelines are:

  • Women look better in camera in dresses or skirts - it also brings a sort of dressiness that speaks to the specialness of getting professional photos taken. Super bonus points if the dress or skirt is flowy - movement on camera looks great and it gives you something to do besides just stand there and smile - that can be so awkward for everyone!
  • Take one color and lightly dabble throughout everyone's outfit to create some sort of unity.
  • Men must wear tailored fitted pants.  Baggy pants make your legs look much larger - you don't want that, do you? I'm not talking about skinny jeans if you can't pull those off - don't - but more tailored fitting pants look great!
  • I'd never gotten my professional hair and makeup for photos but LADIES - it's TOTALLY worth it.  I felt like a million bucks, and this is definitely a situation where that's what I want to feel like!

#2: How do I convince my husband?!

This is a biggie.  I hear this a lot and I even felt a little guilty asking my husband to do this for me! Here's what I did - my husband already knows the importance to me to have photos of us (and our kids) up around our house.  So I told him my idea of wanting photos of us on the huge wall I mentioned earlier.  We haven't had photos of us since our wedding, almost 10 years ago.  I also showed him Lily's photography emphasizing how great it was and how I felt like you can experience the love her couples have for each other in their photos.  Once your guy really sees how you feel about something like this, he really is going to cave.  It's not about liking my photo taken - in fact I really don't like having photos done! It's about the experience that we had together and remembering these years through the photos I plan to have on our walls.

BONUS ANSWER: When your children are grown, when your spouse has a few more wrinkles than you remembered, and your parents have passed.... what will you have left to remember those you love most? More importantly, what will you have to pass on as a legacy to your family?

Chances are, it will be two things:

the memories and the photographs.

Aside from some smudges on your walls and well-loved toys, your photos will be the one tangible thing that celebrate and remember your journey. These are more than just ink on paper or a DVD - these are the moments that tell your story! If you color your hair every other month, or grab a coffee a few times a week.... you are EASILY spending MUCH more per year on these things that, while fabulous, will fade away!

All of these tips and more nuggets on info are included in my style guide!

Here is a run down of the main clothing items:

Tulle Skirt Charolotte Russe
Chiffon Blouse H&M
Floral Neck Tie Express
Tie dyed dress (featured on email about this!) from Amazon

Eric and Amanda

A few favorites from an awesome early morning perfectly dressed couple! Wowzers!
I’ve been begging for someone to wear a tulle skirt and it finally happened! Look how awesome it looks on camera!

Having photos printed in your house for all to see! It’s just not about you.  It’s about the time we’ve both invested in this photo experience.  It’s also about your future children and their children seeing these photos of how you both love each other so much! It’s much more than seeing photos – it’s about experiencing the love between the two of you that will pass down from generation to generation!

Love the details here.  These are going straight to my style guide magazine!
Hot off the press this week! I’m so excited!!!
Having details in your session make your session look more editorial.

Huge thanks for Jennifer Peterson of Lip Lock Smooches for awesome make-up!

James and Erin 10th Anniversary Session

I’m so excited to share this 10th anniversary session! James and Erin never had wedding photos so these were 4 kids late long overdue! Their session was gifted by their friends (also my brother and his awesome wife – hi guys!) who have lived all around the world with them for the military.

I also LOVE the Charlotte Russe dress Erin bought for the session.  It’s the perfect color and length and I can really tell she read my style guide.  SPOILER ALERT: my NEW UPDATED style MAGAZINE is coming really soon – ahhhh!

10 years! Wahoo! Congratulations James and Erin!

Thank you guys SO much! It was really fun to get to know you both! My memories of the eclipse (coolest thing ever!!!) will always be paired with having a great portrait session with you! When you see these photos in your house I hope that it will increase your appreciation for each other and your kids will see how much you love each other.

She said YES! Tyler and Alanna

She said YES!!! I had the awesome privilege of photographing Tyler proposing to Alanna hovering over the Ft. Worth Stockyards.  It was so so so so so so so amazing!  Tyler hired me in secret so I was posing as a photographer just tagging along on their ride to take a tour of the city.  I’m totally not an aerial photographer (I really don’t think my aerial shots are really amazing either) so I was hoping she wasn’t going to see my not-so-awesome lens for aerial photography — I think that is just a geeky photography thing to think about, I’m pretty sure she didn’t even notice.

Tyler had great music as we were hovering and he was pouring his heart out – just in case you’re wondering you can mute the back passenger’s conversations so the pilot and co-pilot (that was me!) can’t hear.

Congratulations Tyler and Alanna! Thank you guys SO MUCH!!!

This is one of my most favorite things about being a photographer – I get the chance to be apart of people’s lives in such an intimate way! Tyler and Alanna, years later when you look back at these photos I hope that they will stir up those emotions you felt at this point in your relationship and help you appreciate each other more and more.

LOVE these of them!!

Texas Motor Speedway – even from up above this place is IMPRESSIVE!

Tarant County Courthouse – I photographed Wil and Haleigh’s wedding here – it’s SO BEAUTIFUL inside!

The funny things we saw – only in Texas do you have swimming pools shaped like your state.

The helicopter tour was hosted by Epic Helicopters.  Highly recommend them – they’re so great.  The tour is individualized so really whatever you want to see they make it happen.  It was also very private.

What to Wear Wednesdays: Slightly Casual Engagement Session

Here’s another plug for my style guide that I provide my clients to help them make the hard decisions for their photo shoot.  Today’s “what to wear” is for an engagement session but really could be extended for a mom and dad on a family portrait session.  I’ve kept the colors light because I think lighter colors compliment the skin better and l think these colors compliment golden hour colors from the sun better.

mintdress-549x800.jpg

I usually recommend a longer dress for the ladies because long, full-length, flowy dresses and skirts look amazing on camera because they bring extra movement to the photos. Especially when juxtaposed with nature, like open fields, forest, or beaches.  I LOVE this mint color – it’s really popular right now and I think it compliments a variety of different skin tones. It’s also a casual dress which is what I hear from a lot of clients that they’re looking for.  This material looks like it would be fairly airy in this Texas heat! This would look nice with a pair of strappy sandals or if you wanted to get a few shots with your cowgirl boots standing in tall grass that’d look great too.

I love this shirt for it’s color (and how it compliments the dress color) and for it’s material.  You can pull off several different looks with this shirt by having the sleeves down or rolled up slightly.  You can also bring along a sport coat to throw on for a quick shot to make your photos look slightly different.

Long fitted pants are the most sophisticated and most masculine and help draw attention away from legs and feet and place the attention on the face. Loose and baggy pants make legs look actually bigger than they are.  I always recommend fitted pants.  These khakis are a great match for the shirt and chances are you might already  have a pair like this.  If you don’t, adding them to your wardrobe won’t be hard because they will get a lot of use out of them.  Finish this look off by wearing a pair of brown closed toed shoes.

Zack and Lyssa Sneak Peak

I’ve been looking forward to photographing in Dallas for a while now! There are so many nooks and crannies of great spots! I had such a fun engagement session today with Zack and Lyssa.  We started out at Klyde Warner Park (photos to come!), went to Bishop Arts to snag this heart shot, and then to the great Deep Ellum.  It was a long wait to meet this couple and they exceeded my expectations in awesome-ness. I’m so excited to share this sneak peak but can’t wait to post more! Congratulations Zack and Lyssa!

Dallas Wedding: John and Stephanie

Such a pretty wedding to share with you today! As I drove up to Flippen Park (Dallas) my photographer’s heart just melted.  John and Stephanie chose the most beautiful spot for their wedding.  This park is probably a speck on the map but it is a BIG deal.  Rows and rows of different colored azaleas, beautiful kept grass, huge looming 30-year old trees, and then the park is lined with out-of-this world gigantic beautiful Dallas homes.   Usually I care when things like houses are  in such things as wedding photos, but these were out of a bridal magazine.  John and Stephanie had such a laid back personality, it was so stress-less! They really had the perfect wedding for them.  John and Stephanie, congratulations! Wishing you the best, you guys are so happy together! Wil and Hayleigh: Ft. Worth and Ft. Worth Botanic Gardens

I’m so happy to be looking at these photos! Wil and Haleigh are super sweet and I had such a great time photographing them and their family.  I had never been to a courthouse wedding, and it was so smooth and easy and really really nice.  The Tarant County Courthouse is so beautiful! The judge who married them was so kind, personable, and really cared about his job!  After the courthouse we went to the Botanic Gardens in Ft. Worth and it was so beautiful! There were a billion brides and couples…and for good reason! It’s the cream of the crop location to take photos. Wil and Haleigh are one of the sweetest couples I have met! They met as elementary school teachers….in the same school:) I think I told them they were gorgeous too many times.  But really??? They are! So happy for these two!
