What is a viewing session?

Hello!

I wanted to give you a sneak peek into my viewing session that is the 3rd step of my photo experience. I’m always REALLY nervous about situations I have no idea what is going to happen, so if you’re like me then hopefully I can put your mind at ease!

There are 4 parts to all of my family’s photo experience. The third step is a viewing session.

So what exactly is a viewing session?

my photo experience

After your photos are edited and ready to go, we have your viewing session. Best case scenario we schedule a viewing session while we schedule everything else. The viewing session usually happens one week or so after your photo session. During busy season it can take a tad longer.

WHERE? At your house
WHAT DO I BRING? My laptop with a slideshow of your photos and my software I use to show you your photos on your walls (or a digitally mock-up of an album if that’s what you want instead). I also bring the products you said you were most interested in for your wall gallery.

HOW IT WORKS

We start the viewing session with a slideshow. One or two times? It’s up to you!

Secondly, you rate your photos. There are only two ratings, Xs or CHECKS.

Next, you compare your similar images. I suggest comparing all the sibling photos, mom and dad together, etc.

The whole point of what has happened up to this point is so that you can narrow the choices down to your most favorite photo.

Lastly, you view the pre-designed wall galleries (or albums).

Remember that photo I took of your wall? Remember that gallery that you said you liked the best? Remember the price that you knew for the gallery? All of that took place during the pre-planning session. View details of the pre-planning meeting if you missed it here!

Now you are just virtually viewing your actual photos on your mock up wall. You can change the arrangement, orientation, and sizes. You can swap out photos for your favorite.

The whole part of the viewing session is to find a home for all your favorite photos. I want you to have all your favorite photos out in the open for you and your family to enjoy them….not forgotten on some hard drive.

See your photos in your home helps you love and appreciate those closest in your life better. We all need a little more of that in our lives?

Pre-session planning meeting

Do you like when people listen to you?

One of my pet peeves is when people are more interested in themselves when I’m trying to talk to them about something that is important to me. It’s a give a take relationship because you think what you’re talking about is important but at the same time you have to listen to the other person because they’re important too. It’s a mind swirling kind of thing.

It’s something we emphasis in our home every single day. Other people are important, they’re more important than ourselves. Treat other people as more important than you.

So that’s what I bring to the pre-session planning meeting.

Usually this happens in your home and I come and sit and listen to you. I’ll ask you a few leading questions, but I’m really there to listen to what you say. Because it’s IMPORTANT, you’re important!

Here are some of the questing I might ask (this isn’t based off of a script so they’re never the same!)

  1. When was the last time you had photos taken?

  2. What was that like?

  3. Where do you see your photos from our session living in your home?

  4. What are some characteristics of your kids that you want me to focus on during the

    photo session?

  5. What do the photos look like that you've always imagined on the walls of your home?

So why do you have to answer all these questions?

Well you’re important to me! Also, it sets up both up for success! I always give this example…

If you’ve always dreamed of having square photos in your living room, but you never tell me…then you might get photos that you’re disappointed with. If I don’t ask - or don’t listen…then I’ll never know this about you! Not all photos can be cropped as squares!

This photo’s crop is very tight! I would suggest using a rectangle crop instead. The sisters on the end look like they’re being pushed out of the family!

This is a much better example of a photo that can be cropped square.

So all in all, setting out all the expectations is the way I like things to roll! Everyone is happier in the end!

Cohen Reinartz – Family Rep Program

So it’s a rule that you have to think your baby is the most adorable baby ever.  There is no pretending here – Cohen really is so adorable.  When my son, Phoenix was about this age, a lady stopped me in a coffee shop and said (very genuinely!) “I really think you have the most beautiful baby I’ve ever seen!” I loved that and still remember almost 7 years later.  I’m pretty sure that when Kevin and Jessica are in public with Cohen people say the same things.  He is just so beautiful and sweet!

I love photographing kids as they grow up!
It’s so great to see how much they’ve changed physically but also to see their personalities to come out!

If you missed his sweet puppy and dinosaur newborn photos SEE THEM HERE!

Photo Gallery Wall Design

I’ve recently discovered that I love what babies do with their arms.
They are really great at arm/hand models.
Babies usually just put their hands and arms in the perfect spots to create a spontaneous photo…you know when they’re not chewing on their hands.

Thank you, guys!!! I am looking forward to photographing the whole family next month! I love having you apart of my Family Rep Program!

The Baxter’s Christmas Session

I’m nervous about sharing Christmas sessions because of the anticipation of sharing for Christmas cards – but when Carrie shared over her social media I knew that I could too! I love repeating photographing families! Last year this little girl was much harder to get her to look decently happy for her photos – this year….completely different! It’s so fun watching kids grow up in front of my camera! So many cute family photos to share with friends and family I can’t wait to see which one they choose!

Having photos on our walls help us remember sharing fun experiences with each other.
They also help you remember to love and appreciation those who matter most in your lives.
When you’re having a tough day, you inevitably walk by a portrait of each other and it acts a reminder to appreciate each other.

Couple Outfit Pick for Fall Photo

Hi there! This is the third in the series of What to Wear/Styling your Photo Session.  You can find the other posts directed at what women should wear here and then for the guys here.  Hope this helps you decide what to wear and bring to your Fall Photo Session!

Here is a gorgeous pick for those of you wanting style options for your fall photos.  I love the pumpkin color of this dress! I wanted to give you some affordable options for you to choose for your session if you were thinking of purchasing instead of renting clothes and accessories.  Some of these types of items you might already have or could borrow from.  I would feel self-conscious with the opening of the dress so I’d chose a simple lacy top to go on underneath.

Women: What to Wear to your Fall Session

I’m starting a series of post about what to wear to a photo session.  It can be a really really hard task.  You finally schedule a photo session but then you have to decide what everyone is going to wear.  If you have a family shoot that can be really daunting because you have so many people to worry about!  I’m here to help!

I’m going to start first with the ladies.  This advice can be for engagements, solo-shots, or family photos.  I really want you to have the best experience and the best photos and I think it may start with dressing the part.  These tips are here so that you can get the MOST out of your portrait experience!

Don’t be afraid to look the part!

I look in my closet and think I don’t have anything to wear but did you know you can RENT awesome clothes at really affordable prices? Don’t be afraid to rent something.  It can really make your photo session look awesome, just the way you want it to look. These examples are from Dress Lily and Rent the Runway.  Clients also have loved buying one (or two!) things to update their wardrobe.

Quick Tip:  Long dresses flatter a women’s body.

I recommend saying no to shorts (and even pants) for portrait sessions for the ladies.  Long dresses photograph really well.  If you have a family session you’re likely to be sitting on the ground with kids piled on top of you.  The longer dress allows for easier movement with kids.  With engagement session, longer dresses will flatter your figure and also get the “spinning effect”.  Also, high heels make women’s legs look longer.  We all want some of that, right? On these sites you can also rent heels.  Friends are also good places to ask to borrow shoes.  Chances are they won’t be wearing the heels at the same time.

If the idea of bringing two outfits is too stressful, then stick to one.

Colors:

My recommendation for this would be to choose softer and lighter tones.  These will bring in the most light to your photographs to make your skin look awesome.

Flattering your figure:

In talking to many women I find that all women have self-conscious parts of their bodies.  My recommendation would be to choose clothes that compliment your natural features and don’t highlight those features you’re concerned about.  That is the best way to look back at the photos and love the way you look in them.  Wear 3/4 sleeves if you want to slim down your arms.  You can also bring a jacket or sweater to go along with your outfit.  Strapless and halter tops have the opposite effect, so stick with sleeves for a set of slimmer arms.

Tip: Bring a pair of comfortable flip flops or flats to put on when moving from one location to the next.

Accessorize:

Bring accessories to flair up your already awesome outfit.  This can be a necklace, bracelet, belt, or hats.  These can also be borrow from friends or rented.

To make your session unique you can bring something extra to your session.  Think of something that has a wow factor. This can be balloons, chairs, baskets with flowers.  It’s a good idea to bring a blanket that will look nice with what you choose to wear.  I love lighter color blankets because they photograph really well.  You could also pull together people you know and ask about a vintage car or bike to bring.

Hair and Makeup:

This may be the time to treat your self to professional hair and make-up.  It may just take the stress of the day.  Don’t you feel like a million bucks when a professional has done your hair? If you get your makeup done, tell them to apply your make up in natural light if possible.

So in a few words that’s my recommendation.  I want you to feel and look like a million bucks! This is a special moment to document and I can’t want to get that started for you.
